Description
The Swiss Protestant Church, built between 1853 and 1854 by George Vulliamy, is a notable example of 19th-century architecture. The church features a rusticated stucco exterior with a two-storey symmetrical facade consisting of three bays. The central entrance bay slightly projects forward and is adorned with Ionic pilasters and engaged columns, which have seraphim capitals. These elements rise through both storeys and support an entablature with a modillion cornice and a parapet. The parapet is decorated with a central pediment that displays a book emitting rays, topped with a ball at the apex, and matching balls at the corners of the building. The parapet is inscribed with "A D EGLISE-SUISSE 1854."
The entrance includes a central architraved doorway, which features a console-bracketed dentil cornice and double fielded panelled doors. Above the doors is a continuous frieze with a Vitruvian scroll design, along with a Diocletian window that has a console keystone and a seraphim. The flanking bays contain square-headed windows on the first floor and round-arched windows on the ground floor.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to be of Classical style, featuring a first-floor gallery at the east end and an apsed western sanctuary, with a vaulted roof supported by brackets.
