Description

A terrace of eight shops with accommodation above was built around 1822 by Thomas Cubitt and restored in the late 20th century. The buildings are stucco, with the ground floors painted black, and have slated roofs with dormers.

The terrace is three storeys high, with attics and cellars. Each building has one window. The upper floors have party walls articulated by narrow recessed bays, with a further narrow window bay between the buildings at numbers 2 and 4. Numbers 4 to 8 and 16 have original shopfronts with pilasters that support a continuous entablature featuring anthemion ornament on the architrave. These shopfronts have projecting, bracketed windows with rounded corners and small panes. Number 2 lacks a shopfront; number 10's shopfront has been altered; number 12’s shopfront has been converted into a hotel entrance; and number 14 has a 20th-century shop window added in a Regency style, although lacking the continuous entablature. Most shopfronts are flanked by panelled and half-glazed doors with overlights. Numbers 14 and 16 have round-arched doorways with cornice heads, patterned fanlights, and half-glazed doors. Upper floor windows are segmental-arched and have plain architraves studded with paterae. The first floor windows have four lights with cast-iron balconies, while the second floor has tripartite windows. The parapets have plain bands. The right-hand return of number 16 has two windows, one with a cast-iron balcony and pilasters with fat palmette capitals, topped by a pediment.

The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
