Description
Nos. 6-20 Sicilian Avenue is a shopping parade with offices that were formerly flats, built between 1906 and 1910 by architect R.J. Worley for the Bedford Estate. The building is constructed of red brick with white terracotta dressings and features five storeys with eleven window bays. The ground floor has later 20th-century shopfronts that are separated by Corinthian columns on plinths, which support an entablature with a plain terracotta frieze at the second floor level. There are pilasters at either end of the ground floor.
On the first floor, the windows are square-headed casement types with four and two lights and mullions. The second, third, and fourth floors have canted transom and mullion bay windows, which are flanked by two-light transom and mullion windows, as well as bowed oriel windows that rise from the second floor. The end bays feature two-light windows. All windows have small leaded panes, with some displaying shields. A projecting modillion cornice is topped by a balustrade, and there are tall slab chimneys.
The interiors have not been inspected. Nos. 6-20 Sicilian Avenue form a cohesive development with Nos. 1-29 (odd) Sicilian Avenue, 15-23 (odd) Southampton Row, 25-35 (odd) and 35A Southampton Row, and 1-6 Vernon Place.
