Description
The Church of St Mary Brookfield is a church built between 1869 and 1875 by architect William Butterfield, with a chancel added around 1881 by W.C. Street. It features brown brick with red and black diaper patterns, along with stone and red brick bands and dressings. The church is designed in the Decorated Gothic style and includes a 4-bay nave, north and south aisles, and a chancel. The gabled west end has a 5-light tracery window, and there is a bellcote over the porch on the right. The nave has a cornice below the parapet and is adorned with massive gargoyles. The aisles are buttressed, and the chancel also has a 5-light tracery window with a hoodmould. Notably, the spire was not constructed.
Inside, the church features stock brick with diaper work, red brick and white stone bands, and flecks of black. The interior boasts a fine double-framed collar-braced roof above a deep clerestory. The chancel arch includes a double ogee rood beam, and there is a 15th-century Nottingham alabaster panel depicting St Arthmael set into a column. An octagonal font is also present.
