Description

This is a block of ten artisans’ flats, constructed in 1871. It was built for the philanthropic solicitor Hugh Jackson, and the design may have been reviewed by his architect son, TG Jackson. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick dressings, and features a slated hipped roof with projecting eaves and tall brick chimney stacks. It stands five storeys high and comprises five bays, articulated by red brick pilasters that rise from brick bands through the second and third floors, and again at the fourth floor. A plain brick band runs along the first floor level, while the ground and first floors feature rusticated quoins. A recessed open staircase occupies the central bay, with round-arched openings and plain cast-iron balconies to each landing. The windows are almost flush sashes with gauged brick segmental arches, while those on the top floor have flat arches. The interiors were not inspected as part of the listing process.
