Description

Number 44 is a terraced house built around 1710 and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of multi-coloured stock brick that has been painted red. The building has four storeys and a basement, featuring plain brick bands on the first and second floors and three windows across its façade. The original wooden doorcase has an architrave with sunk panel pilasters and carved console brackets that support a pulvinated frieze and a projecting cornice. It includes a rectangular fanlight above a part-glazed door. The ground floor has casement windows set in fluted, flush frames, while the first and second floors feature gauged brick flat arches above flush-framed sash windows with fluted surrounds to the exposed boxing. The third floor has recessed two-pane sashes and a parapet. The property also has attached cast-iron railings. Notably, this house was the residence of Bishop Challoner, who served as Vicar-apostolic of the London District, as indicated by a private plaque. The interior has not been inspected.
