Description
A pair of K6 telephone kiosks and a single additional kiosk stand at the northeast corner of Russell Square, just outside Russell Square Gardens, which is on the Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II. They face the Russell Hotel, a Grade II* listed building approximately 30 meters to the east.
These kiosks are constructed from cast iron and glass, painted red overall, with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied, rather than perforated, crowns are situated on the top panels. They feature rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof and contain modernised equipment internally.
The K6 telephone kiosk, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, represents a milestone in 20th-century industrial design. It developed from Scott’s earlier K2 telephone kiosk of 1924, being more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were eventually produced, with many remaining as iconic features of the British streetscape. These kiosks contribute to the group value, being situated within the important Georgian urban ensemble of Russell Square and in close proximity to other listed buildings and K6 kiosks.
