Description
Numbers 70, 71, and 72 are a terrace of three houses built between 1793 and 1799 by James Burton. They are constructed from darkened multi-coloured stock brick, featuring a rusticated stucco ground floor and stucco dressings. The terrace is four storeys high with basements and has three windows for each house. It forms the central block of what was once a complete terrace. The ground floor is arcaded, with impost bands and round-arched sash windows set in plain, shallow recesses. The entrances are recessed and have part-glazed doors with decorative wrought-iron grills in the fanlights; however, No. 72 has been altered to function as a window.
Ten attached stucco Doric columns rise through the first and second floors, supporting an entablature at the third floor level, and continue as pilasters on the third attic floor. The windows have gauged brick flat arches above recessed sashes, while the first-floor casements are accompanied by continuous cast-iron balconies. The buildings are topped with parapets. The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace is complemented by attached cast-iron railings with urn finials surrounding the areas.
