Description
The Horse Hospital is a former stable building constructed around 1890. It is made of yellow stock brick with red brick dressings and features cast iron railings in front of the ground floor windows, topped with a slate roof. The building has a two-storey range with six windows on the northern mews elevation, twin doors at the east end, and a splayed northwest corner. There is also a three-storey return elevation to the west, which has decorative diapered brick ornamentation.
Inside, there are ramped concrete stairs leading down to a sunken ground floor and up to the first floor. The stable floors are unusually channelled concrete, marked with the stamp 'S. Ward & Co., George Street, London SW', and supported by cast iron columns. The upper floor features a large former stable with an open trussed roof also supported by cast iron columns, along with an ancillary room that has tongue and groove boarded panelling.
Historically, this site has been associated with equestrian use since it was built by James Burton between 1794 and 1797. It has served various purposes over the years, including being occupied by veterinary surgeons and farriers, and later functioning as a print shop until 1988. The Horse Hospital is a rare example of double-decker inner-city stables.
