Description

Numbers 2-12 and attached railings form a terrace of eleven houses built between 1821 and 1832 as part of Mornington Crescent, constructed by I Bryant for the Southampton Estate. The houses are stucco faced, with rusticated ground floors and a third-floor string course, although numbers 4 has been painted. The upper floors are yellow stock brick, except for number 4. The roofs are slate with segmental-headed dormers, except for number 4 which has square dormers. The terrace is symmetrical, with slightly projecting end bays at numbers 2 & 3 and 11 & 12.

The houses are three storeys with attics and basements, with numbers 2, 3, 11 and 12 being four storeys, also with basements. Each house has two windows. Ground floor openings are round-arched, with the end houses having sashes in shallow recesses. Most doorways have three-quarter Doric columns supporting cornice heads, with fanlights (patterned at numbers 2, 3, 11 and 12) and panelled doors. The first floors have continuous cast-iron balconies. The end houses have parapets, while the others have a stucco blocking course, although only number 5 retains a cornice. Windows are recessed sashes, with the end houses having architraves and the others with gauged brick flat arches.

The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with tasselled spearhead finials are present to the areas.

From 1905, number 6 was the home of Walter Sickert, the painter and etcher, who played a prominent role in the Camden Town and Fitzroy Groups of painters, and later the London Group; during the 1890s he painted and sketched the Bedford Music Hall in Camden.
