Description

St Vedast's School for Boys, located on Sarum Chase, is a private house that was converted into a school around 1932. It was designed by Vyvyan Salisbury for his uncle, the painter and stained glass artist Frank Salisbury, with alterations made in 1963. The building features brown brick with stone dressings, and a range to the left of the entrance is black and white timber-framed. The roofs are hipped and slated, adorned with dormers, brick "Tudor" chimneys, and gargoyles.

The exterior is mainly two storeys with attics and showcases an irregular facade in an elaborate medieval style. The entrance bay is asymmetrically set and projects forward, featuring a ground floor porch flanked by curved walls and mullion windows, creating a shallow forecourt. The porch has a 4-centred arch entrance flanked by small vertically set windows with hood moulds and double heavy timber doors. Above the porch is a tall transom and mullion oriel window. To the right at the first floor level, there is a gable with a small oriel that has a penthouse roof. To the left, there are two timber-framed gabled dormers and a range of lights with leaded diamond panes on the overhanging first floor. The ground floor of this range includes an 8-light projecting transom and mullion window. There is a left-hand projecting brick wing with a full height 5-light oriel window, and to the right, a single-storey entrance range spans the front of the timber-framed bay, connecting to the curved forecourt wall; it features a 4-centred arch entrance and transom and mullion windows. Some stained glass is present in various windows. The interior has not been inspected.
