Description

Numbers 14-22 on Theobald's Road are a row of terraced houses built around 1750 and restored in 1989. They are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick and feature stone bands at the first and second floor levels, except for No. 18, which has a stone band at the first floor, a first floor sill band, and a stone bracketed cornice at the third floor level. The houses are four storeys tall with basements and each has three windows. The wooden doorcases are adorned with pediments and supported by Doric engaged columns, topped with an entablature that includes a Greek fret frieze. No. 20 has enriched consoles supporting a flat hood, while No. 22 features a pulvinated frieze, modillion cornice, and a pediment. All houses have double panelled doors, with Nos. 14 and 16 also having fanlights. The windows have gauged brick flat arches over recessed sashes, some of which are reddened, and there are parapets above. The attached cast-iron railings with torch flambe finials protect the areas in front of the houses. Notably, No. 22 was the birthplace of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, as marked by a plaque from the London County Council.
