Description
The monument to Elizabeth Madox Brown is located in Highgate (Western) Cemetery and dates from 1846. It was designed by her husband, the Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown. The monument features a stone cross in Gothic style, positioned above an inscribed headstone that includes a sacred monogram surrounded by a crown of thorns. The arms of the cross are adorned with reliefs of grapes and ears of wheat, symbolizing the Eucharist and Christ's sacrifice. Additionally, there is a footstone topped with a circular finial that contains a cross. This monument commemorates the first wife of Ford Madox Brown, whose design is held in the Manchester City Art Gallery.
