Description
No. 5 Church Row is a terraced house built in 1728 by R Hughes. It was refronted with weatherboard in the late 18th century. The building has three storeys and five windows. The ground floor features wooden rustications that imitate ashlar, along with one window and an architraved doorway that has a patterned fanlight and a panelled door. The upper floors project as a canted bay, showcasing flush frame sashes with exposed boxing—three on the front and one on each return. A dentil cornice adds to the architectural detail.
The interior has not been inspected but is noted to retain panelling and an 18th-century staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and square newels. The contrast between the projecting weatherboarded house and its brick neighbours contributes significantly to the picturesque composition of Church Row.
