Description
The Old Bank House, located at the rear of Nos 58 and 60 (Barclays Bank), is a store that was formerly a house, dating from the mid-18th century. It is two storeys tall with attics and features five windows. The building is constructed of red brick and has a string course at the first floor level. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has gable chimneys made of red brick. The windows have segmental arches made of gauged brick; originally, they had sash windows, but most openings have been altered for 19th-century iron small-pane casements in moulded wooden frames.
The entrance door, dating from the 18th century, has eight fielded panels and a fanlight with a segmental head and vertical glazing bars, flanked by broad flat side panels. The brickwork indicates that there was once an entablature or porch with pilasters. Inside, there is a well-preserved 18th-century staircase that spans three floors, featuring newels with moulded caps and ball finials, moulded handrails, turned balusters, and dado panelling on the walls. The house was likely extensively panelled in the past, but most of this, along with the fireplaces and many doors, has been largely removed.
