Description

Number 30 and the attached stable is a house from the early 19th century located on Crown Street in Bury St Edmunds. The building is constructed of white brick, with render on the sides and part of the rear, and features a shallow-pitched slate roof with paired bracketed eaves soffit.

The house has two storeys and cellars, with a three-window range. The upper storey has 16-pane sash windows set in plain reveals with flat gauged arches and stone sills, while the ground storey features sashes without glazing bars. The central entrance door is recessed and has six panels, framed by a plain segmental-arched brick surround, Greek Doric columns in antis, and a fanlight with pointed Gothick glazing bars. There is a recessed foot-scraper on either side of the entrance.

To the left, there is a slightly lower one-bay stable block made of similar materials, which includes a 12-pane sash window on the upper storey and a door with six sunk panels below. At the rear of the building, there are three sash windows on the upper storey in flush cased frames, consisting of one 12-pane window and two with a single vertical glazing bar.

Inside, the house features six-panelled doors with panelled reveals and moulded architraves, along with internal window shutters that have sunk panels. A boxed-in beam can be found in the hall. There are signs of later 19th-century alterations, including an enlarged entrance hall and a reduction in size of the ground storey room to the right of the entry due to the insertion of a large staircase.
