Description

The granary and maltings located to the south-east of Maltings Farmhouse dates from around 1800 and features an L-shaped plan. It stands two storeys tall, with nine bays on one side and three on the other, and includes a mid-19th century maltings added at the north-east end. A single-storey lean-to, built at the same time as the main structure, runs along the inner side of both ranges. The building is timber-framed with red brick infilling on the upper storey, which sits above a low ground-storey made of flint and red brick. The upper walls are now covered in corrugated iron, and the roofs are black-glazed pantiles. The windows are slatted and have internal hook-up shutters. The maltings section is constructed entirely of brick and flint.

Inside the granary, there is notable timbering and a unique combination of features. The low ground-storey has exposed timber ceilings with substantial joists set on edge, and the inner side walls are open to the lean-to, separated only by the main posts. All components are morticed and pegged, with many displaying assembly marks. The roof lacks principal rafters and features two rows of stepped butt purlins along with a ridge-piece. The main posts have shaped heads, and the king-post trusses include two queen-struts that spring from the thickened base of the king-post. In the angle of the two ranges, remnants of a former conical roof and dragon-ties that strengthen the four corners of the frame suggest that this was once the location of the original malting kiln.
