Description
The barn at Maltings Farm is an early 19th-century structure. It is built of tarred clay lump on a flint and brick base, with the south wall partly constructed in early to mid-19th century brick, also tarred. The roof is covered with glazed black pantiles. The barn has a six-bay plan featuring two threshing floors.
On the east elevation, there are plank doors leading to two gabled porches, along with ventilation slits beneath the eaves. A clay lump lean-to is attached, which has double entry to the southeast. To the north, there is a one-storey and loft clay lump stable that extends slightly around to the front in a lean-to form. The gable end of this stable has two stable doors, a 20th-century vehicular entrance, and a loft door with small ventilation openings on either side.
The west elevation features plank double doors, ventilation slits beneath the eaves, and two later 19th-century raking buttresses. Inside, the barn has a six-bay clasped-purlin roof that has been reinforced with additional purlins, strutting, and two extra tie beams. This barn is noted for being a complete and unusual example of a large clay lump barn.
