Description
Smithy Cottage is a 17th-century house that features one-and-a-half storeys and a three-cell plan. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof that has a decorated ridge. It has one end chimney-stack and another chimney-stack set internally, both with small plain red brick shafts. The cottage includes small-paned 20th-century casement windows, an eyebrow dormer with an old casement window, and a plank door. The timber frame is of a single date, and the entrance door remains in its original cross-entry position. The upper floor displays plain framing and rafters, some of which have assembly marks, along with some reused timbers. An original partition uncovered on the ground floor features a doorway with a rectangular, chamfered surround. The hearth in the middle room, which has been infilled with 20th-century brickwork, retains an original plain timber lintel above. The roof is supported by side purlins.
