Description
The Moulton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with alterations made after the Second World War and later. It is made of Portland stone and is prominently located in the churchyard of the Grade I-listed Church of St Peter, near the main (north) entrance.
The memorial features a Latin cross with flared arms atop a slender octagonal shaft, which has a carved foot and plinth, all standing on a tall three-stepped base. The main inscription is located on the front (west) faces of the steps of the base, stating on the upper step: "IN GRATEFUL AND HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF MOULTON / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the middle step, while the lower step bears the inscription: "REST ETERNAL GRANT TO THEM O LORD." The names of those who fell in the First World War are also listed on the northern and southern faces of the middle step.
On the rear (east) faces of the steps, the upper step is inscribed with "1939–1945," and the middle step lists the names of seven individuals who fell in that conflict. The lower step is inscribed with "KOREA" and the name of one fallen soldier, along with the date "1951."
