Description
The Priory is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in 1846, with a fragmentary medieval core and a 16th-century wing at the rear. It has two storeys and an irregular plan. The exterior is made of gault brick, featuring a string course at the first floor. The roof is hipped and slated, with axial chimneys made of gault brick. The windows have flat arches of gault brick and small-pane sash designs. On the north side, there is a panelled entrance door topped with a moulded cornice supported by console brackets. The rear wing is timber-framed and rendered, with some first-floor members showing roll and ogee moulding; this wing was re-roofed and altered in 1846. The 19th-century work replaced a masonry wing where a fine 15th-century laver or piscina was discovered, which has since been reset in the 19th-century walling of the entrance hall. This discovery led to the assumption that the building had originally been a chapel. Some of the original walling is believed to be incorporated into the current structure. For details about the building before 1846, refer to "Notes about Moulton" in the Newmarket Journal from August 6, 1904, at the Suffolk Records Office.
