Description
Bradfield House is a house and restaurant that was formerly a rectory, built in the early 18th century and altered in the late 18th and late 19th centuries. The building has two storeys and attics, with four windows. It is timber-framed and rendered, with the framing now exposed and painted, featuring slender close-studding and primary bracing. The roof is a hipped gambrel style, with the lower slopes covered in plain tiles and the upper slopes in double Roman pantiles. There are late 19th-century hipped casement dormers that are also covered in plain tiles.
The house has 18th-century axial chimneys made of red brick, with their tops rebuilt in the 19th century. The windows are small-pane sash types, most of which have mid-18th-century thick glazing bars and crown glass. The entrance door, dating from the mid-18th century, has six fielded panels and is sheltered by a modern timber-framed and plain-tiled porch. There are also 19th-century wings to the right of the main building, which have roofs of Roman pantiles and slates.
Inside, there are notable features from around 1750 to 1780, possibly added in two stages. These include a staircase with turned balusters and console brackets beneath the treads, four- and six-panel doors, and decorative fireplace surrounds and grates.
