Description

No. 6 Westgate Street is a house, which has been later divided into flats and is now used as offices. It was built around 1819, possibly by William Wilkins. The front is made of white brick, while the sides and rear are red brick, topped with a slate roof.

The building has three storeys and a basement, and it has developed in three stages. The main block features a three-window range of 12-pane sash windows with plain reveals and flat gauged arches on the first and second storeys. On the ground storey, there is a large segmental flat-roofed bay adorned with a triglyph frieze and cornice, which includes three 12-pane sash windows.

To the west of the main block is a slightly lower three-storey range that has two 12-pane sashes in plain reveals on the second storey and two similar windows on the first storey, one of which has been lowered. There is also a 16-pane sash window with a segmental-arched surround on the ground storey. A raised brick band runs between the first and second storey windows of this section, and a change in the brickwork indicates that the second storey was added later.

At the west end, there is a third lower section that remains three-storey, featuring a single blank window on the first and second storeys. The ground storey has a single-storey addition, built with matching materials and a hipped roof, projecting at the front.

The main range at the rear consists of three storeys with a basement and has a three-window range of 12-pane sashes with segmental heads in flush cased frames on the second storey, partly replaced by two-light casements on the first storey. The ground storey features a large flat-roofed canted three-light bay that projects above the basement. Various smaller extensions are present at the west end, mainly with 12-pane sash windows. The interior has not been inspected.
