Description

BURY ST EDMUNDS

TL8563NE WESTGATE STREET 639-1/11/664 (South side) 07/08/52 No.6

GV II

House, later divided into flats, now offices. Circa 1819. Possibly by William Wilkins. White brick front, red brick sides and rear; slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and basement; the building has developed in 3 stages. The main block has a 3-window range of 12-pane sashes in plain reveals with flat gauged arches to the 1st and 2nd storeys. On the ground storey, a large segmental flat-roofed bay with a triglyph frieze and cornice has 3 12-pane sash windows. To the west of the main block is a slightly lower 3-storey range with 2 12-pane sashes in plain reveals on the 2nd storey and 2 similar windows on the 1st storey, one of which has been lowered. A 16-pane sash window with segmental-arched surround to the ground storey. A raised brick band runs between the 1st and 2nd storey windows of this part of the house and a change in the brickwork indicates that the 2nd storey was added later. A 3rd lower section at the west end is still 3-storey: a single blank window to the 1st and 2nd storeys. On the ground storey a single-storey addition, in matching materials with a hipped roof, projects on the front. The main range at the rear is in 3 storeys with a basement. 3 window range: 12-pane sashes with segmental heads in flush cased frames to the 2nd storey; partly replaced by 2-light casements on the 1st storey. The ground storey has a large flat-roofed canted 3-light bay projecting above the basement. At the west end various smaller extensions, mainly with 12-pane sash windows. INTERIOR: not inspected.
