Description

No. 1 Westgate Street is a house, now used as offices, that dates back to 1884. It was built as a model house by Lot Jackaman, who also constructed the Corn Exchange in Bury St Edmunds. The building features random knapped flint and sandstone with long-and-short quoins that include medallions. It has a slate roof adorned with fretted ridge-tiles and is designed in the High Victorian Gothic style.

The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, with a three-window range. Most windows have stilted stone hood-moulds with foliated and carved head-stops. The first-storey windows are cross windows with mullions and transoms, showcasing stop-chamfered stone arrises and moulded stone sills. The eastern ground-storey window is set in a square stone bay, featuring moulded chamfered stone corner columns and a rounded moulded parapet. The other two ground-storey windows are irregular in proportion, also with mullions and transoms. A seven-panelled door is set within a mullioned and transomed screen with glazing bars, topped by a hood-mould, splayed jambs, and a datestone in a shield above. A simple Doric cornice finishes the entrance.

The east gable, designed for visibility, includes a gable finial, a decorated window surround, an ornate keystone, and a name stone that reads "Jackaman; Builder, stone and marble mason." It also features balusters, consoles, terracotta ventilators, Ionic capitals, a cherub mask, and various stone surface treatments and textures. The west gable has fluted bargeboards, imitation half-timbering, and herringbone red brick infill. The interior has not been inspected.
