Description
1 The Traverse is a combined shop that was originally two separate houses and shops, known as Nos 1 and 2, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The building features a mix of white brick and a slate roof, along with timber framing and rendering. The corner section is constructed in white brick with a fully-hipped slate roof and a wide modillion eaves soffit. A raised brick band runs between the first and second storey windows.
The exterior consists of three storeys and cellars, with two windows on each facade. All windows are sashes with single vertical glazing bars set in deep reveals. The first storey windows have flat gauged cement arches with vermiculated keystones, and on the Cornhill facade, they include diminished side lights. The ground storey features a late 20th-century shop front in Regency style with a corner entry. The former No. 2 is timber-framed and rendered, with a flat roof behind a plain parapet and a moulded cornice. It also has two windows, all sashes in flush cased frames with a single vertical glazing bar. The ground storey here has a 20th-century double shop front with a central entry.
The interior has been extensively modernised, with the cellar now part of the retail area. No visible elements of either building appear to date from before the 19th century.
