Description
The War Memorial, located in Cavendish, was built between 1919 and 1920 by Leonard Crowfoot. It is constructed from ashlar, featuring a Portland stone cross mounted on a York stone base. Designed in a Gothic style, it resembles a wayside cross. The memorial has a hexagonal plinth that displays the names of the Fallen on bronze plaques, which stands on a stepped base. Above the plinth is a frieze adorned with quatrefoils, supporting the shaft of the cross. At the top, a foliage capital holds the cross. The memorial also commemorates names from the Second World War and the 1956 Cyprus conflict. This finely detailed structure is part of a significant group of historic buildings surrounding the Green.
