Description
The entrance gateway located 15 metres north of Wamil Hall dates from the late 16th century and was likely constructed for Sir Henry Warner, who died in 1617. The gateway measures about 3 metres wide and 4 metres high, with flanking brick walls that were built or rebuilt in the 18th century and altered in the 20th century. The north face of the gateway features a dressed limestone facade, with backing piers made of gault and orange brick. It has a moulded arched opening, flanked by moulded pilasters and an entablature, with the cornice and pilaster capitals decorated with egg-and-dart ornament. Within the pediment is a well-carved central achievement, likely representing Sir Henry Warner, flanked by stone balls. The original oak door is counterboarded with multiple nailing and includes a wicket door, complete with strap hinges and sliding bolts. The brick flanking walls are approximately 2.5 metres high, partially rebuilt in the 20th century, but they retain moulded stone copings and ball finials at the piers. After about 7 metres, the walls return towards Wamil Hall, interrupted by a later gateway on the east side, originally forming an inner court against the north side of Wamil Hall.
