Description
The water tower, built in 1895, is located 200 metres south-west of Elveden Hall. It stands about 20 metres high and has a square plan. The design is eclectic, primarily featuring Baroque details. The structure is made of red brick with limestone dressings at the upper levels. It has a battered base and consists of four stages, with the fourth stage being the most prominent. The third stage features flush horizontal bands of limestone ashlar, while the fourth stage showcases strongly expressed limestone dressings. The windows are designed in the Baroque style, with limestone architraves that include keystones and moulded cornices. Each face of the fourth stage has a large central window, accompanied by a balustraded balcony supported by stone brackets. Flanking flat pilasters uphold a moulded cornice and arcaded parapets topped with central Flemish gables. The doorway at the base has a semi-circular brick arch made up of several orders, leading to deeply recessed framed and boarded doors. The tower is capped with a copper-covered cupola roof featuring a weather-vane finial. It is listed as Grade II* due to its exceptional elaborateness and imposing presence as a Victorian estate water tower.
