Description
The barn located to the north of Blackthorpe Farmhouse dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame, covered in weatherboarding, and has a thatched roof. The barn features a single aisle along the north side and consists of seven bays, with high entrance doors at both ends of the central bay. The structure displays substantial studding and includes a middle rail on the west wall. The trusses are designed with long arched braces, although some have been replaced with bolted knees. Additional arched braces extend from the back of the main posts to the side ties of the aisle.
The main components of the barn have assembly marks, and the joints include edge-halved and bridled scarf joints at the arcade- and wall-plate. The roof is of very lightweight construction, featuring one row of clasped purlins and lacking principal rafters, suggesting it may have been replaced later. It also has extensive modern strutting.
