Description
The dovecote, located 150 metres south of Coldham Hall, dates from the mid-19th century and has an earlier core. It features a circular plan and is constructed of red brick with gault brick dressings, with the first stage having a battered design. The roof is conical and covered with plain tiles, complemented by a deep rendered coved cornice. There are five blank rendered niches with gault brick surrounds, and a sixth niche is open and barred for ventilation. Below the eaves, a band of blank arcading in gault brick mimics machicolation, with three arches left open as access holes for the doves. The entrance doorway is arched and deeply recessed within a heavy red brick frame that has a gabled head, leading to a battened and boarded door. Inside, the walls are lined with nesting boxes made from unfired clay bats, and there is a central potence that once supported an access ladder, which is now missing.
