Description
Barfords is a house dating from the 17th century, with a small core that may date back to the 15th or early 16th century. The building has one and a half storeys and attics, featuring a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped with a double Roman pantiled roof that includes gabled casement dormers and axial chimneys made of red brick. One chimney has four octagonal attached flues on a square base with a moulded string course, while the other has a single octagonal flue; both chimneys are said to have been rebuilt in the 20th century using old bricks.
The house features 19th and 20th century small-pane casements and a 20th century gabled pantiled entrance porch with a boarded door. At the parlour end, there is a surviving cell from an earlier house that has an end-jettied first floor. This wall was converted in the mid-17th century to a brick gable with an integral fireplace. To the left, there is a small one-storey addition from the 18th century. To the right is an early 19th century wing that was originally a Roman Catholic chapel, featuring a vaulted ceiling and casements with wrought iron small panes and arched heads. The house is enclosed by a moat of medieval origin.
