Description

Elm House is a house dating to approximately 1600, with early 18th-century additions and 19th-century alterations. It is constructed with a timber frame and plaster, and has double-rolled pantile roofs. The roofs are punctuated by 17th-century brick ridge stacks, with upper sections rebuilt in the 19th century. The house follows a three-unit lobby-entry plan, with a cross-wing forming the service end. It is two storeys high and has a three-window front with 3-light casement windows. The doorway has a plank door and a moulded cornice dating to approximately 1800.

The two-bay cross-wing dates to approximately 1600. Inside the cross-wing, there are axial bridging beams with run-out stops (lambstongue-stopped chamfers), and unchamfered, flat-laid joists. A blocked 3-light diamond mullion window is visible within a partition wall. There is an open kitchen fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. In the late 19th century, the walls of the cross-wing were raised by approximately 0.5 metres, and the roof was rebuilt.

The main range has close studding, largely concealed. Bridging beams to the first floor and attic are run-out stopped chamfered. In the hall ceiling, the joists are similar and laid flat, initially exposed. The parlour joists are flat-laid and unchamfered, originally plastered. Open fireplaces with bressumers are present in the hall and parlour. Several 17th-century plank doors remain. A straight-flight stair in the cross passage is likely from the 19th century. The house represents a largely unaltered early 17th-century dwelling, aside from the roof.
