Description
The barn at Grange Farm, dated 1849, features an engine house and is constructed of Flemish bond brick. The barn has a gabled Welsh slate roof, while the engine house has a pyramidal Welsh slate roof. The barn includes a south aisle and two gabled midstreys that flank a polygonal engine house to the south. The engine house has semi-circular arched ground-floor openings made with bull-nosed brick and two plank doors on the left. A date stone above the door reads "BURNT 1849/SIR T R GAGE BART/REBUILT 1849." This building is noted as a very rare example of a Suffolk engine house, as mechanization was adopted late in Suffolk farms due to the continued low wage rates well into the 19th century.
