Description
The boundary walls and gates to Number 1 Garden Cottage date from the 18th century. The structure is made of a combination of kidney flints, black knapped flints, freestone, and white brick. It features a heavily rusticated stone archway with a semi-circular head, supported by Roman Doric pilasters and topped with a pediment. The frieze above the archway is inscribed with the words 'ET VOLUPTATI PLURIMUM ET SALUTI'. This entrance led to the kitchen gardens of the Hall, as noted in 'Excursions through the County of Suffolk' from 1819.
The wrought iron ornamental gate has a semi-circular head that mirrors an old door in the garden wall of Ampton Hall. On either side of the archway, there are short stretches of high wall constructed from kidney flints, flanked by two rusticated white brick piers topped with large stone ball finials. Additionally, on the north side, there is a further short stretch of wall made from black knapped random flint, which ends in a third matching brick pier and finial.
