Description
The Stoke-by-Clare war memorial is a significant structure unveiled in 1921, dedicated to local men who served in the First World War and those who fell in the Second World War.
This memorial is made from Portland stone and features an obelisk on a square plinth, base, and two steps. The west side of the obelisk is inscribed with the words ‘TO THE / MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF STOKE / WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919’. The names of 27 men who died in the First World War are listed on the west face of the plinth, while the other three sides honor 80 men who served and returned. On the base, the west face is inscribed with the dates ‘1939-1945’ and the names of three local men who died in the Second World War. The memorial is prominently located next to The Street (A1092), the main road through Stoke-by-Clare, in the garden of the former village primary school, which is now Stoke College nursery school.
