Description
Darmsden Hall Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It has one storey with attics and features a timber-framed and plastered structure, showcasing some impressive 18th-century cable-pattern pargetting in large panels on the south side. The roof is covered with concrete tiles, having been originally thatched, and there is a central chimney made of red brick from the 17th or 18th century. The cottage includes various 19th and 20th-century casement windows, along with a 20th-century entrance porch on the garden side, which is made of brick, has a concrete-tiled roof, and features a four-panelled door.
Inside, the heart of the house is a smoke-encrusted open hall. It contains a complete open truss with a cambered and chamfered tie-beam supported by plain arch-braces. There is also a closed truss with widely spaced studding and long arch-form wind-braces. A large 17th-century chimney, which heats the hall, is positioned against the cross-passage. Evidence suggests there were originally shuttered windows in the hall. The original service end cell has been replaced by an 18th-century kitchen, while a storeyed cell at the upper end retains much 18th-century work. The hall features a lodged upper floor with reused joists and beams.
