Description

Pipps Ford is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th century and 17th century, constructed in three phases, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is timber-framed, featuring exposed wind-braced studding and blackened plaster infill panels. A two-storey 19th-century outshut at the front is made of painted brick. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and there are two axial chimneys made of red brick. The layout follows a three-cell cross-entry plan and the house has two storeys. Most of the windows are small-pane casements from the 19th century, although some original windows remain unblocked and glazed, showcasing diamond and ovolo-moulded mullions on the garden side.

At the cross-entry position, there is a two-storey 17th-century entrance porch with exposed upper wall framing, and the moulded head of an original oriel window survives above the entrance. The entrance features a 19th-century four-panelled door. To the left, there is a detached two-cell 17th-century bakehouse with a dairy, which was separate until the 19th century and includes some 18th-century cable-pattern pargetting. The earliest phase of the house includes the hall and service cell, characterized by plain framing and evidence of a rear cross-entry doorway with a shallow arched head. The parlour block, added soon after, is of higher quality and features an ovolo-moulded bridging joist. A further wing was added to the rear of the service end later in the 17th century.
