Description
West House is a house dating from around 1550, which was remodelled around 1970. It has two storeys and a three-cell cross-entry plan. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a Roman pantiled roof that was once thatched. There is an axial chimney from the 16th or 17th century made of narrow red bricks. The windows are mid-20th century casements, with those on the ground floor featuring transoms. The entrance door, also from the mid-20th century, is battened and boarded with an arched head. Inside, there is very fine exposed framing, including first-floor joists that are roll-moulded, main beams that are double-roll moulded with leaf-stops, roll-moulded mullioned windows, and closely spaced studding. This craftsmanship is comparable to that found in Fords Green, Bacton, which is likely by the same carpenter. There is a single-storey extension from around 1970 on the right side, along with other two-storey extensions at the rear.
