Description

No. 5, Church Road is a house dating back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and renovated in the 20th. It is timber-framed and has roughcast render and a plaintiled roof. The house consists of two main sections, and is one-and-a-half storeys high, with a small attic. The windows are largely 20th-century replacements, with metal-framed windows on the ground floor featuring horizontal glazing bars. A raking dormer window is present on the roof. The entrance is a 20th-century lobby with a semi-glazed door. The chimney stack features a substantial axial shaft of brick with an inset panel at its base. A 20th-century lean-to addition extends from the left gable end, projecting forward and meeting the front facade.

Inside, the original four-bay timber frame remains, with heavy studding visible on the upper floor, showing evidence of original diamond-mullioned windows. Two tie beams have been cut out. The original room layout is not entirely clear. A two-bay room to the right was originally unheated and features plain ceiling joists set flat. The adjacent bay has smaller, lodged ceiling joists, likely added in the 17th century alongside the chimney stack, which is positioned between the two bays. A wide lintol sits above a blocked fireplace in the main room. A small room to the left of the stack has a 17th-century floorbeam with ogee stop-chamfered edges, and a plain upper ceiling. A newel stair is located next to the stack. The roof uses butt purlins, although most of the timbers are now concealed.
