Description
33 Gracechurch Street is a house that was once known as the Joiners Arms inn. It dates back to the 16th century and underwent renovations around 1972. The building is timber framed, has a smooth rendered exterior, and features a pantiled roof. It is designed in a 2-cell, end chimney style and has two storeys. The windows are mid-20th century casements with diamond-leaded panes, and the cross-entry has a mid-20th century door. There are stacks against each gable end, with the original stack located on the left side. A one-storey lean-to is attached to the left gable end.
Inside, the structure largely retains its original 4-bay frame. The plain joists in both cells include some that have been partly cut away to accommodate a mid-20th century staircase. There is evidence of an axial division in the service cell, which features one original 4-centre arched doorway, while another doorway is concealed but reportedly still exists. There is also a narrower 16th-century doorway in the service partition that is not original. The interior boasts a good open fireplace, and on the upper floor, there is a blocked gable end window with diamond mullions. The hall chamber includes a low tie beam with cranked braces, and the wind-braced side purlin roof is mostly concealed.
