Description
This stable, located 50 meters south of Boundary Farmhouse, dates from the early to mid-17th century. It features two windows and was once used for lodgings above. Constructed from red brick, it has a band with a sawtooth course at the first floor level and a further moulded band at the gable foot. The building showcases fine Dutch gables, which formerly had finials at both the gable foot and apex. Each gable includes a circular window and a diaperwork pattern made from burnt headers. The roof is covered with corrugated iron, although it was originally tiled.
The stable has oak-framed, ovolo-moulded mullioned windows set in square-headed chamfered brick openings, which were once fitted with leaded glazing. The ground floor windows feature moulded pediments with simulated limestone dressings made of plaster, much of which has now fallen away. Each pediment includes a square plaster panel that bears the weathered figure of a Gryffon. One window was converted into a doorway in the 19th century.
There is a damaged original central doorway that has a deep moulded cornice adorned with three moulded obelisks, which were once plastered. This doorway has been partially blocked and now includes a 20th-century door, but it retains the original oak door frame. The upper floor has largely been removed, leaving a chamfered main beam that once supported three large acorn pendants. Some chamfered on-edge joists are still visible. The roof structure consists of a two-tier side-purlin roof, with the upper tier being clasped and wind-braced, while the lower tier is butted.
At the north end, there is a lower and shorter original range with a communicating door from the loft above the stable. This section also has a wind-braced clasped purlin roof and a Dutch gable at the north end. Adjacent to the south side is a large mid-20th-century grain store, which is not of special interest. The stable is currently in poor condition.
