Description
Crownlands Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof. The cottage has one storey and attics, designed in a three-cell layout, with the third unit added around 1800 to create two cottages from one. The chimney stack is made of red brick and consists of two phases, with the older half on the left.
The building features one square-headed dormer with a two-light casement window. On the ground floor, there is one two-light and one three-light mid-20th century metal casement window, along with a traditional-style two-light window that has horizontal bars. The entrance is through a plank door. To the right, there is a small single-storey lean-to with a pantiled roof, also featuring a plank door.
Inside, the framing is exposed, with some main components reused. Part of the rear wall plate was formerly a post with notched lap housing. The main beams have a worn chamfer, and the joists are set on edge, with one room containing unusually curved joists. The original house was likely built in a two-cell end-chimney form.
