Description
Chelsea Cottage is a house that was used as a smallpox isolation hospital from 1678 to 1730 before becoming a residence again. It dates from the mid-17th century, with a north-east bay added in the 20th century. The building features a rendered and colourwashed timber frame set on a brick plinth, with a pantiled roof and concrete corrugated tiles on the rear. The layout follows a lobby entrance plan and comprises two storeys and an attic. A gabled porch was added in 1974.
The first floor has two five-light and one three-light 20th-century cross casements, while the ground floor features three late 20th-century top-hung casements. The gabled roof has a ridge stack positioned to the left of centre, which was originally centred before the extra bay was added. The rear of the building includes 20th-century additions and fenestration. Inside, the cottage has heavy scantling timber framing with chamfered bridging beams, open fireplaces, and a 20th-century staircase.
