Description

Old Church Farmhouse is a manor farmhouse dating from the early to mid 16th century, featuring a cross-wing on the right that projects to the front. The main range, built in the early or mid 17th century, consists of three cells with a small addition at the rear from the late 17th century. The structure is timber framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof, while the rear of the main range and part of the wing are covered with glazed black tiles. The building has two storeys and an attic, with windows that are mainly mid 20th century standard casements lacking glazing bars. There is a half-glazed door located in the gable end of the wing.

Inside, the cross-wing is a fragment of a high-quality 16th-century house, likely serving as a parlour cell, and the main range once extended to the west. The former outside wall adjacent to the main range features heavy close studding, an oriel window sill, and an upper window with plain square-set mullions. A central tie beam retains one solid brace with a carved spandrel that originally contained a painted shield. The cambered upper ceiling appears to be original, as there is evidence of a gable window. The intact queen-post roof includes a central truss with down braces extending from the queen-posts to the centre of the tie beam, although one brace is missing. The main range consists of four and a half bays, with plain first floor studding and one ground floor room featuring plain joists set flat. There is an unmodernised former dairy at the north end, and an oak newel stair leading to the attic, which has an old door. The roof is supported by two rows of butt purlins.
