Description

This building, known as L Aldous, is a shop and workshop with residential accommodation that is currently used for storage. It features a section dating from around 1540 on the right, 18th-century work on the left, and 19th-century infilling in between. The structure is primarily timber framed and roughcast-rendered, with a plaintiled roof, while the later work at the rear has a pantiled roof. The 16th-century section is two storeys and has an attic, with a jettied upper floor, while the rest of the building is one and a half storeys.

The lower part of the building has a full-width projecting shopfront, which includes a late 19th-century sashed bay window on the right and three older six-paned windows on the left. There is a half-glazed four-panel door leading to the shop and a boarded half-door for the workshop, both of which are inset. A single raking dormer features a four-paned sash window. The 16th-century section has a six-paned sash window on each floor.

Inside, the building has seen little alteration since the 19th century. The workshop contains an 18th-century glazed office partition with its original door. The gable end of the 18th-century section showcases pargetted plasterwork. The 16th-century section was part of a former inn, which had a galleried rear and a queen-post roof. For more information about the remainder of the former inn, see items 6/71 and 6/100.
