Description

Sexton Cottage is a former house, now used as church rooms, dating from around 1530. It features a timber frame with mid-20th century panelled plasterwork and herringbone pargetting. The right gable end is made of rendered 19th century brick, and a section of the house is missing. The roof has plain tiles at the front and pantiles at the rear. The building is two storeys tall, with the upper floor jettied at both the front and rear, although most of the rear jetty is now underbuilt. Original brackets support the front jetty. There are two windows with casements and horizontal glazing bars, and a central plank door leads into the original cross-entry. A gable stack is located on the right side.

Inside, the service bay and lower bay of the hall remain, while the upper bay of the hall and the assumed parlour bay have been lost. The interior shows exposed studding with evidence of original windows. The hall features heavy plain joists, and at the rear, there is original trimming for a stack, while the joists in the service end are concealed. The front half of the service end was used as a shop. The roof has a plain crown-post design with two-way bracing. The building was referred to as 'Le Towne House' in a survey from 1621, indicating it had some public use. For a drawing of the structure, see Mr. T. Easton, Bedfield Hall.
