Description

Debenham Fish Shop consists of two houses and a shop, with origins dating back to the 15th century. The building was largely rebuilt in the early 16th century in the Wealden style, with one jettied end now identified as No. 38. It features a timber frame that is rendered, and the roof is pantiled, with No. 34 covered in glazed black tiles. The structure is two storeys high, and the jetty on the right side is now hidden by a projecting late 19th-century shopfront at No. 32. There are brackets supporting the flying wallplate, which are partly concealed by a coved cornice. The windows are mainly old 3-light casements, while No. 34 has a 6-paned sash window on the ground floor. The entrance to No. 36 has a boarded door, and No. 34 features a 4-panel door. There is an internal stack present.

Inside, the end wall of No. 36 retains substantial 15th-century features, including heavy studding, a rail with mutilated moulding, and embattled decoration, likely from a dais beam at the upper end of the open hall. The rest of the structure appears to be from the 16th century, although much of No. 34's interior is concealed. The rear wall of No. 36 has a blocked window with cavetto mullions, and an adjacent cross-partition includes a 4-centre arched doorway. The stack has a bay but is a later addition, likely replacing a timber flue. Behind the stack, there is a stair with heavy treads. The roof over both properties is a plain crown-post design, which probably once extended over the adjacent carriageway.
