Description
The Great Blakenham War Memorial, built in 1920, is a tribute to those who served in the First and Second World Wars. It is made of a granite cross set on a tall circular stone column, which stands on a square plinth with chamfered corners. The column is supported by a four-stepped stone base that is surrounded by a flowerbed.
The main inscription, crafted in leaded lettering, is located on the west face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of those who fell in the First World War are listed on the south and east faces of the plinth, with the east face also featuring the phrase: "OUR DEAD THROUGH WHOM WE LIVE." The north face of the plinth bears the inscription: "ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF GREAT BLAKENHAM."
Additionally, a later stone tablet has been added to the west front of the top two steps, which includes the inscription: "AND 1939 – 1945 (NAMES)."
