Description
Shrubland Hall Lodge is a Grade II listed lodge cottage built around 1856 in the Italianate style for Sir W.F. Middleton, Bart. The lodge features a small three-storey tower with single-storey wings on three sides. It is primarily constructed of gault brick, accented by prominent stucco dressings, including rusticated quoins, a band at the first floor, and a modillioned cornice just below the eaves. The roof is pyramidal, covered with double Roman pantiles, and has oversailing eaves with exposed sprockets.
The lodge has various original windows, each framed by broad stucco architraves. On the west face, there is a pair of niches within a gabled oriel, supported by columns. The ground floor features several small-pane sash windows. An open colonnade facing the gateway supports a hipped-roofed balcony. The entrance door is panelled, with the upper part glazed, and above it is a blind arch that bears the monogram W.F.M.
To the left, there is a small single-storey wing that was raised to two storeys in the mid-20th century. The lodge shares stylistic similarities with the Italianate tower that was added to Shrubland Hall during the same period by Sir Charles Barry, although there is no evidence that he was involved in the design of this lodge.
