Description
Malting Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century, with a 15th-century core. It has a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan and consists of one storey and attics. The building is timber-framed and rough-cast, topped with a plaintiled roof featuring gabled casement dormers and an axial chimney made of red brick, which was recapped in the 19th century. Most of the windows are 20th-century casements. The entrance doorway, dating to around 1800, has an eared architrave and a moulded pediment, leading to a 20th-century glazed two-panelled door.
Adjacent to the road is a 15th-century two-bay open hall, which originally had a central open truss that was removed in the 17th century when a first floor was added to the upper bay. The roof is smoke-blackened and of the coupled-rafter type, with side-purlins added later. In the lower bay, a large chimney was inserted in the 16th century, at which time a new hall was constructed beyond it, featuring a cross-passage, a chamber above, and a service cell beyond, all with coupled-rafter roofs. The framing from the 15th and 16th centuries is plain and substantial. Additionally, two small timber-framed wings were added to the rear in the 17th century. The 16th-century service cell was converted into a parlour around 1800, complete with a fireplace and a moulded arched corner cupboard.
